Forest of Bere Reserves 3 Whiteley XI 1

The first league game of the season saw Whiteley XI take on Forest of Bere Reserves.

Whiteley XI started a little nervously with Forest of Bere attacking well using both wings and balls over the top. Luckily, James M was on form in goal and kept out a couple of efforts with a great save and Damo turning a corner around the post.

Whiteley XI managed to win a corner which was swung in by Mo. Simon making a late charge climbed well and smashed his header centimetres wide with the defender and keeper well beaten.

Whiteley XI started getting back into the game and started taking the game to Forest of Bere. it wasn't long before Whiteley XI were rewarded with some superb individual play. Ray was passed the ball which he took on his chest on the edge of the penalty area. He had his back to goal but managed to turn andthump a volley straight into the top corner. It was a superb goal and well deserved.

Five minutes later and Forest of Bere drew level. Unfortunately there was some sloppy defending from a long throw and after a scramble, their striker fired the ball into the net.

On the half hour mark, Ray almost put Whiteley XI in front again. With the ball played through to him, he took it round one defender, then cut in and beat the sceond defender. With only the keeper to beat, it took a last ditch tackle to block the ball which stopped an almost certain goal.

Half time followed ten minutes later and Whiteley XI went in level with Forest of Bere.

The second half started brightly with Whiteley XI dominating the first ten minutes. Their strikers were doing well when they got the ball but their number 9 was having a mare after Damo had spent the entire game winding him up. He got a chance later on but fired/miscued his shot well wide with only James to beat, forcing hysterical laughter from Damo who reminded him that he was sh*t!

Fifteen minutes into the second half and a long ball over the top saw Forest of Bere take the lead. With Jon being challenged by their player, he managed to get in front of Jon and fire a low shot past James.

Again james managed to keep them at bay with a string of good saves. It wasnt long before the game was dead and buried with Forest of Bere Grabbing their third goal. With a lapse in concentration from the defence their striker got the ball and, after Damo had managed to toe the ball away from him, it fell to their midfielder who crashed a shot from the edge of the area off the cross bar. The ball ball bounced over the line and into the roof of the net.

Unfortunately Whiteley XI could not get back into the game and the final whistle went with the score at 3-1.

Man of the match has to go to James for some outstanding saves during the match, well done mate.
